About John Edgar Gould
Born: April 9, 1821, Bangor, Maine.
Died: March 4, 1875, Algiers, Africa. Gould became ill and died while traveling.
Buried: November 28, 1875, Woodlands Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gould managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His partner in Philadelphia was composer William Fischer. Together with Edward L. White, Gould compiled:
- The Modern Harp, 1846
- The Wreath of School Songs, 1847
- The Tyrolian Lyre, 1847
- The Sunday School Lute, 1848
- Harmonia Sacra, 1851
- Songs of Gladness for the Sabbath School, 1869
John Edgar Gould wrote hymn and glee tunes. When he was suffering from illness,
he wrote a piece of music that still remains in use today. The tune "Pilot" used
for "Jesus Saviour, Pilot me".
About Edward Hopper

Hopper graduated from New York University (1839)
and Union Theological Seminary (1842).
He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1842, and pastored in
Greenville, New York; Sag Harbor, Long Island;
and at the Church of the Land and the Sea in New York.

THE REV. DR. EDWARD HOPPER
The Rev. Dr. Edward Hopper, pastor of tho Church of
Ihe Sea and Land (Presbyterian), at Henry and Market
Sts., died from heart disease In his study, at No. 81
Jane St. yesterday. Although he had suffered from
the disease for several yeats, his death was unexpected.
He ate a hearty breakfast and lt was not until about
10 o'clock that ho complained of a pain In his breast.
His niece advised him to consult a physician, but he
said be would walt untll forenoon. Five minutes before
noon, his neice went to hls study and fuond him dead
In his chair. Ho had written a few lines of a poem
"On Heaven." and his pencil still lay on the page of
tbe manuscript.
Dr. Hopper was seventy years of age. He was
graduated fiom the University of the City of New
York in i839. He first preached in Greenville, N Y.,
and later was pastor of the Presbyterian Church of
Sag Harbor. He began hts labors as pastor of the
Church of the Sea and tho Land twenty years ago.
Many of his hearers were sailors. He was a scholarly
man and he wrote a number of poems and stories which
havo been published, his wife, Margaretta, died In
their home on East Twelfth St. seven months ago.
They had no children. After her death he went to
llve with his niece in Jane St. Mrs Hopper was author
of a book entitled " Echoes from the Song of Songs,
whieh ls Solomons." Her body was burled at the
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Deer Tarrytown, Mr. Hopper's,
birthplace, and his remains will be buried there also.
